  • Notice to club members

    4-April-2017

    Dear club members.

Over the next 48 hours our club will more than likely get flooded to a height greater than 2015, and potentially higher than any of our most senior club members have experienced.

Our club will be okay, we have taken all appropriate measures with our pontoon, our boats, and our equipment. The new changing rooms were designed for a flooding event. The building is a tough old ship and she has been through this many times.

This will be a test for the club, but we are up to the challenge as we have since 1877.

In 48 hours we could be the only rowing club on the Whanganui River.

  • Passing of Frank Crotty

Our condolences go out to the Crotty’s family for Frank Crotty who passed away last month.

Frank rowed for three years at the club and was in the 1958 Champion four and the four that went to Cardiff in the same year. In 1956 he was in Peter Aitchison’s youth crew with Graham Moran and Peter Harwood . In 1957 he rowed in the Union four with Don Gemmell, Dave Martin and Allan Tong winning at the New Zealand Championships

Our deepest sympathy go out to the Crotty family from the UBC Family.

  • Billy Webb Challenge Results

Tim Ole Naske wins the Whanganui Billy Webb Challenge 2016!!

It was as an Olympic re-match between Mahe Drysdale and Damir Martin, but two young guns stole the show at the Billy Webb Challenge on the Whanganui River on Sunday.

World under 23 champion German Tim Ole Naske, edged out Kiwi Jordan Parry to claim the title in challenging conditions.

But bragging rights between Drysdale and Martin belong to the Croatian who was third and well ahead of Drysdale back in fifth.

A strong breeze meant choppy conditions and a fast current for the 35 rowers who left from the Union Boat Club, rowing 2.5km up-stream before turning around and returning to the boat club.

A couple of logs littered the course adding a further challenge to the rowers, who were competing across 10 divisions.

Naske won the race in 22 minutes 21 seconds, with Parry three seconds behind.

The race began at the Aramoho finish line, down river to the National Library then back up to the finish line. The way home was a tough paddle as crews fought against the strong Whanganui current. We had a great turnout of boats despite this.

Pat was the best of the Union crews, placing 5th overall.

  • Special Thanks – Whanganui Olympics Ceremony

Special Thanks – Whanganui Olympics Ceremony

    Olympic Celebration Ceremony

    Dear All

I wish to sincerely thank you all for your efforts and input into a really relaxing but successful day for Rebecca and Chris on Saturday. Apart from the Haka not quite coming up, the day went off very smoothy and Rebecca, her family and Chris seemed genuinely delighted with the day and the effort a combined group of Whanganui people and organisations put into making that happen.

Many thanks to the Chronicle Mark for the coverage and I suspect there may be another story coming on Rebecca’s thoughts on her campaign, future etc.

Thank you also Darryl for your efforts and the coverage of THE HITS. Apologies to those I didn’t see on the day; Rugby days are busy activities at Cooks and of course our boys (Maori and Heartland) did themselves proud.

    Yours in Sport,
